Everything You Want to Know About Reiki

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a holistic healing therapy whereby the energy worker uses hand placement and/or conscious focused intention to channel healing energy. This energy flows through areas of the client’s astral (energetic) body that need clearing.

It’s a gentle, relaxing practice that helps release energetic blockages, ease stress, and bring your body into a theta-wave state of healing.

When energy is stuck, it often shows up as physical tension, emotional overwhelm, fatigue, or even illness. Reiki helps you release the blocked energy of old patterns and emotions and reconnect with your inner clarity and intuition.

 Reiki Session FAQs

Every Reiki session is different! But I’ll share with you some of what you can expect if you do a session with me online or with our therapists at Sayulita Reiki and Yoga.

  • You will arrive and we’ll talk about your session and what you would like to get out of our time together. You’ll lie down fully clothed on a massage table (or on a yoga mat if it's a group session). I gently place my hands on or just above your body various positions. This enables me to “read” your energy and work on any blockages. You might feel warmth, tingling, or simply deep relaxation. You might fall asleep! You will be reawakened from your deep relaxation feeling blissful and renewed. Once the session is complete, we’ll discuss the experience and any shifts taking place.

  • You don’t need to meditate or “try” to feel anything. Just lay down and relax. Reiki usually works right away to put you in a restful, theta healing state. The more you do nothing and deeply rest in this theta state, the more you will receive the healing energy.

  • It’s different for everyone but will likely feel a deep sense of calm, peace, or lightness. Some people experience warmth, gentle waves of energy, or emotional release. Others see colors or images. From one session to the next, you are likely to experience different sensations because your energy is always shifting.

  • You will only receive healing energy if you wish to be open to it. Even if you don’t know how it’s working, if you are open to improving your energy, the healing will come to you. Even the most skeptical can benefit from th deeply relaxed theta state of resting in the Reiki session. Physical responses such as lowered heart and breath rate, relaxing the nervous system are undeniable for improving overall wellbeing. If you are open, however, Reiki will do all that and much more for you!

  • Yes! Reiki is a non-invasive, gentle healing practice with no negative side effects. It’s used in hospitals to support relaxation and healing.

Reiki only channels pure, healing energy—never anything harmful or negative. It flows through the practitioner, not from them, and is always directed by your highest good.

  • Not all sessions bring up an emotional release, though it’s completely normal. Reiki works on the physical, emotional, and energetic levels, so sometimes emotions rise to the surface to be gently released.

This could look like tears, a sense of relief or unexpected memories.

You’ll be held in a safe, supportive space the entire time.

If nothing big comes up, that’s okay too—Reiki meets you where you are at.

  • Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. You’ll stay fully clothed though you’ll need to remove your shoes. Here in Sayulita, Mexico, many clients come straight from the beach in their bathing suits and cover ups!

  • Group Reiki is a shared healing experience where many receive Reiki at the same time, either in person or virtually. I often offer these group sessions as ceremonies or healing circles. Rather than individual hand placements, the practitioner channels energy to the whole group through focused intention and other healing techniques.

The collective field often amplifies the experience.

  • Yes! Everyone can learn and practice Reiki. No experience is necessary.

I offer Reiki Level 1, 2, and Master training courses (in-person or online), where you'll receive attunements, hands-on practical experience, and mentorship to deepen your connection with energy healing.

  • While it’s hard to understand, Reiki works on an energetic level - that’s beyond time and space! Distance sessions are just as effective as in-person ones. If you are open, I will connect with your energy field from anywhere, and you’ll receive the healing in real time. Many clients feel just as relaxed, aligned, and clear after a distance session. All you need is a quiet space and a willingness to receive. Reiki is not transferred online, we just use that technology for chatting!
