The Wishing Tree

Tucked behind Gypsea’s Sanctuary Airbnb in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., a legendary wishing tree adorned with ornaments awaits unexpecting guests, brimming with magic. To truly feel its mystical power, one must only sit in quiet meditation beneath its sprawling, enchanted branches.

Some say this Live Oak was planted by a wandering mystic who whispered her dreams into its roots, while others believe it grew overnight from a single enchanted seed left by a fairy. Another legend has it, a princess once wished under the tree’s branches to become a mermaid and vanished into the ocean’s embrace, forever lost in her sea of dreams.

It only takes 4-minutes to unfold the mystery. 🔈 Listen to the Audio Story here!

Restaurants Walking Distance to Gypsea’s Sanctuary

Take a break from the car and walk or take a bike to these restaurants. All are no more than .5 miles away.

Bonzer Shack - Great food, family-friendly and tropical cocktails. There’s a backyard for kids to play and often live music.

Kill Devil’s Frozen Custard - Great beach food and dessert a block and a half away!

JK’s - A few steps away, this is OBX’s finest steakhouse, great for special occasions. Also great to pop in the bar for a drink, as they have an incredible wine selection.

Outer Banks Brewing Station - Restaurant and sustainable brewery! Great for kids, as  there is a pirate ship in the backyard and often live music. There are also DJ nights and late-nite concerts if you want to get your party on.

Slice Pizzeria - Quick and convenient pizza by the slice and Italian dishes.

OBX Best Travel Tips

OBX Best: Coffee Shops - Here’s where to grab coffee in the Outer Banks. I always suggest to take your coffee to the beach (and take a minute to meditate or express gratitude). That’s my favorite way to start the day.

OBX Best: Lighthouses - There are two towering lighthouses a short drive from Kill Devil Hills.

A Note About Reviews

Airbnbs review system is very different than a typical hotel site. This example below is not an exaggeration.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Amazing or a pretty good stay. I wished a few things out of the owners control were different (expensive cleaning, I saw a dead bug, neighbors were noisy, something broke during my stay).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Stay was ok but there were some things the owner could do different (I like my bed firmer, Netflix wouldn’t work, I didn’t like the window blinds).

⭐️⭐️⭐️ = I didn’t like it at all, major inaccuracies on the listing. (Owner did not respond, Did something die in here?, The listing promised a shower and there wasn’t one).

⭐️⭐️ = Shut the listing down on Airbnb. Put the owner out of business.

⭐️ = Demolish the home and send the owner to jail.

Please understand this is a small modest cottage and my primary residence. I’m not a wealthy investor with rental properties. Your review is my livlihood, and I do my best to offer you everything you need. I pay my staff to help me answer your requests so that we can be available around the clock. Please be kind in your reviews. We take them to heart!

Also, I realize many Airbnb guests are put off by high cleaning prices.

Cleaning is not a cost I have contol over as I have to pay independent contractors for their time and work because Airbnb has extremely high standards to meet. The money you pay for cleaning goes directly to OBX locals who are blessed with work because you are bringing tourism into the area. Most cleanings take 3-4 hours labor as well as cost of supplies. Hotels don’t charge as much because they can hire full-time, minimum wage workers.

More about us

We are proud team of all women! You can read more about me on the about page of my website, but here is more about my helpers that make this vacation happen for you.
